Jack hopes Tribe can get stronger
NORTHERN Times reporter Jack Calvert was left inspired by his team’s performance at a European fitness event last weekend.
Calvert (25), who regularly writes for the paper as a roving reporter for Scottish Provincial Press, joined five other Highland athletes to take part in the Tribal Clash event at Blackpool Sands in Devon.
Representing their gym, CrossFit 57 North in Inverness, they were among 144 teams who fought it out on the picturesque holiday beach for the coveted tribal mask.
Each ‘tribe’ took part in at least nine workouts across the two-day contest with endurance, strength, speed, balance and teamwork all tested.
Included among the events was a log assault course where the competitors were required to swim and run with their log, a workout which required every team member to walk across a balance beam before beginning tyre presses and gymnastics movements and gruelling long-distance swimming and running races.

Joining Calvert on the team, which placed 85th overall, were Invernessians Chris Jenkins, Chris MacDonald and Sianan Jackson, along with Christi Ross from Alness and Natallia Maguire from Evanton.
Calvert said: "Our final placing wasn’t as high as we’d liked it to have been, which was mainly due to inconsistency.
"We had some really good results, then a couple of stinkers, but what was really evident was the way everyone came together as a team and gave it everything they had until the very end.
"It was a pleasure to compete alongside them and I came home inspired to push on for next year. As a gym, we’re still building our competitive experience and this has been an important step."
