Brora Rangers will look to win as many points as possible as they now need Brechin City to slip up to have chance of winning Highland League title.

MANAGER Steven Mackay says it is up to Brora Rangers to ensure they stay in the Highland League title race and pounce on any slip-up Brechin City make in the final six matches of the season.

The Cattachs lost the top of the table clash 2-0 to Brechin City at Dudgeon Park on Saturday which saw them surrender top spot to their opponents.

Brechin City are now three points clear of Brora Rangers with six matches remaining in the campaign.

Last month, Brora Rangers were four points clear of Brechin City at the top of the table.

But last weekend’s 3-2 defeat at Buckie Thistle followed by yesterday’s defeat has seen Brora lose the advantage in the title race.

Mackay says it is disappointing to concede top spot, but they must put themselves in a position to claim it back if the opportunity arises.

He said: “We have six games left and we have to try and win as many of those as possible and see what happens.

“There has been twists and turns in this league all season, but it is disappointing in the last two weeks we have not done enough.”

Brechin scored twice in the space of a minute to give themselves all three points, with Ewan Loudon grabbing both goals early in the first half.

Mackay said they never looked like doing enough to claw back a two-goal deficit.

He said: “It was 60 seconds of madness.

“It is a freak first goal, but we still need to defend it better than we did.

“The second goal was a good finish from Loudon but his strength is coming down the park, that is what he does and we let him do it.

“We have given them a 2-0 lead out of nothing, one a gift and they sat in and defended.

“We tried to make things happen in the second half and made half chances.

“You need to convert one of them to put on a bit of pressure, but they defended well and were happy for us to try and break them down and we didn’t do enough.

“The damage was done in a 60 second spell of madness which cost us.

“In games like this there are moments that can go for you or against you. The first goal went against us.

“The reality is it was always hard to recover from going down 2-0.”
