Brora Rangers start to start defence of Highland League Cup
BRORA Rangers start the defence of the Highland League Cup when they travel to Keith in the first round of the competition tomorrow afternoon.
The Cattachs won the Highland League Cup last season in dramatic fashion when they defeated Fraserburgh on penalties 5-4 after the teams were locked at 1-1 after extra time at Harlaw Park in Inverurie.
Brora have had a good start to the campaign, already winning silverware this season after thumping Clachnacuddin 6-1 in the North of Scotland Cup final in Nairn last month.
Last week, they moved back to second place in the Highland League with an impressive 2-0 win over fellow title challengers Banks O’Dee in Aberdeen.
Andrew Macleod put Brora Rangers in the lead after 14 minutes who got on to the end of a cross from Tony Dingwall to slot home.
Shane Sutherland doubled their advantage 12 minutes from time as Brora remain seven points behind league leaders Brechin City.
Speaking after the game on Brora Rangers TV, Mackay said it was a well deserved victory for his team.
He said: “Anyone who was here will not begrudge us that victory.
“We were impressive from the first whistle until the last. We had to be as they are an aggressive side and the bravery we showed on the ball, everyone contributed and we are thrilled with the clean sheet.
“It is a massive three points in the grand scheme of things in the title race.
“We started the game well and were on the front foot.
“You have to defend well when you come to places like this and it was our best defensive display. We didn’t give them time to settle on the ball. The second ball was crucial for us and we mopped them up well. A lot of aspects from the game I was really pleased with.
“The second goal was huge for us as it settled us and gave us a bit of a cushion.”
