Highland League Cup semi final sees Brora Rangers travel to Banff to face Deveronvale





BRORA Rangers will look to make the Highland League Cup final when they travel to Banff to face Deveronvale in the semi final clash at Princess Royal Park on Saturday.

The winners of the tie will face either Fraserburgh or Banks O’Dee in the final, with those two teams set to meet at Bellslea on Friday night.

Brora are the holders of the Highland League Cup after winning the trophy last season after beating Fraserburgh 5-4 on penalties.

The two teams were level at 1-1at full time and Brora had to come from behind when Scott Barbour put Fraserburgh in front, but Tom Kelly levelled for Brora Rangers to take the game to penalties. Brora Rangers scored all five penalties with former Cattachs goalkeeper Joe Malin saving Sean Butcher’s spot-kick to give them the trophy.

Brora reached the semi final of this season’s trophy after beating Turriff United 2-1 in the preliminary round, followed by a 5-0 win at Keith in the first round and then beating Formartine United 3-1 on penalties after the two teams were level at 1-1 in the quarter final.

The Cattachs will remain top of the Highland League this weekend after they remained four points clear last week after thrashing Deveronvale 5-0 at Dudgeon Park

Colin Williamson broke the deadlock after five minutes when he got on the end of a drilled cross from Tony Dingwall.

Deveronvale were reduced to 10 men six minutes into the second half when Harry Noble was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

The Cattachs made their man advantage count as they went 2-0 up when Shane Sutherland nodded home a Dingwall free-kick.

Max Ewan made it 3-0 when Connor Bunce sent in a cross from the left wing which found Max Ewan who guided the ball into the net.

It was 4-0 when Alex Cooper who drilled the ball low into the bottom corner. He scored again with 15 minutes left.

Six matches take place in the Highland League tomorrow afternoon. Nearest challengers Brechin City could reduce the gap to one point tomorrow when they host Clachnacuddin.

Forres Mechanics are set to take on Formartine United at Mosset Park. Inverurie Locos face Rothes, Nairn County take on Buckie Thistle, Strathspey Thistle host Keith at Seafield and Wick Academy face Turriff United at Harmsworth Park.
