Allan Lipp and Mhairi Ross are making progress down the east coast of Scotland on their round-Britain rowing challenge – and have broken through the £10,000 barrier in their fundraising efforts on behalf of two charities.

Yesterda morning the Wick couple were off Stonehaven, south of Aberdeen, on their seven-metre carbon-fibre boat Boudicea.

Meanwhile, donations on their online fundraising page had risen to over £10,800.

Allan and Mhairi are aiming to become the first mixed pair to complete an unsupported circumnavigation of the British mainland by rowing boat.

Allan, the Wick RNLI lifeboat coxswain, and Mhairi, who works as a paramedic and is a lifeboat volunteer, expect to take about 60 days to complete the voyage, covering some 2000 nautical miles.

They hope to raise at least £30,000, to be divided between the RNLI and Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance.

On Saturday morning they were given a rousing send-off as they rowed out of Wick harbour.

Wick RNLI press officer John Taylor said: “It’s a very difficult challenge, but they’ve put a lot of years of training into it to try and achieve their goal.”
