ULLAPOOL’s first harbour seal pup of the season has arrived and “looks to be doing well”.

On the morning of June 16, local boat tour Shearwater Cruises spotted the first harbour seal pup of the year, situated in a quiet spot.

The cruise operator said: “Mum had found a quiet spot away from the others and will hopefully return to the haul-out sites once the pup is up for it. Looks to be doing well and was feeding as we passed.

“There are still quite a few pregnant seals, and as they have pups, both they and the pups are quite vulnerable and should be given space as scaring them off the rocks can harm mum and/or pup.

“Please watch out for them on remote beaches, especially if you have dogs. And always remember, if a dependent pup is handled, the mum will not return.

“If you are concerned about seals, best to contact people trained in checking on and handling them.”

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) have volunteers located throughout the UK, who will check or take in seals for treatment if required.
