UHI lecturer to host Battle of Carbisdale talk at Culrain Hall
A lecture marking one of Sutherland’s most significant battles will take place this weekend at Culrain Hall.
The Battle of Carbisdale, fought on April 27, 1650 just outside the village of Culrain, will be the focus of a public talk delivered by Dr Andrew Lind – a historian specialising in the British Civil Wars.
The battle saw Royalist forces led by James Graham, the 1st Marquis of Montrose, clash with a Scottish Covenanter army under Colonel Archibald Strachan.
Despite Montrose’s prior military success, the engagement ended in a decisive defeat for the Royalists.
The aftermath saw Montrose captured and eventually executed in Edinburgh, bringing an end to his final campaign in Scotland.
This Saturday, April 26, Dr Lind, a lecturer at the Institute for Northern Studies at UHI, will outline the key movements leading up to the battle, including the mobilisation of troops in Orkney, the march to the mainland, and the tactics used by both sides on the day.
The talk will also look at the political consequences of the defeat and what it meant for the Royalist cause in Scotland.
The event has been organised by the Culrain and District Hall Committee.
Dr Andrew Lind is a published author with titles ‘The Scottish Royalist Armies of the British Civil Wars, 1639-1655’ and ‘His Majesty’s Loyal Subjects’.
He was appointed a Trustee of the 1st Marquis of Montrose Society in 2020.
Doors open at 1.30pm, with the talk starting at 2pm. Entry is by voluntary donation, and refreshments will be available.
