Timespan in Helmsdale to host talk by ‘Daughters of the North’ author

Inverness-based historian, author and playwright Jennifer Henderson will be speaking at a Sutherland museum this weekend.

Ms Henderson will discuss her acclaimed historical biography ‘Daughters of the North: Jean Gordon and Mary, Queen of Scots’ at an event at Timespan Museum and Arts Centre in Helmsdale from 11am to 1pm tomorrow.

The book was published in 2022 when it was longlisted for the Highland Book Prize. A softback edition has just been published by Dunbeath-based Whittle Publishing.

Ms Henderson’s first book was a biography of novelist and playwright Josephine Tey, and she has lectured and written extensively on Tey’s life, crime fiction and theatre work.

Daughters of the North, which has been described by critics as ‘captivating’, ‘riveting reading’ and ‘utterly absorbing’, chronicles the fascinating and intertwined lives of Jean Gordon, Countess of Sutherland, and Mary, Queen of Scots.

Born in 1545, Jean was the daughter of the Earl of Huntly and became the second wife of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell.

The couple divorced, and the earl went on to marry Mary, Queen of Scots.

Jean survived the intrigues of the Queen’s court and went on to marry the Earl of Sutherland.
