Sutherland top place for self catering
Sutherland has come out as the top destination in Scotland for self catering holidays and short breaks.
This is according to Cottages and Castles, a holiday lettings company, as they reveal record-breaking bookings for the start of the year.
They have highlighted the top five favoured destinations, with the other four being
Wester Ross, Aberfeldy, the Isle of Arran and Taynuilt.
This year the company has reported a 64 per cent increase in bookings for the month of January, while February bookings were up 34 per cent on last year’s figures.
Forty five per cent of bookings have come from Scotland, 50 per cent from England and five per cent from overseas.
Sue Bourne, manager of Cottages and Castles, said: “We have experienced a great upward trend in our bookings for the start of this year with January taking advantage of an early Easter and people planning ahead.
“However with February bookings also being up considerably, self-catering staycations are proving as popular as ever with 95 per cent of our bookings coming from within the UK.
“So far we have witnessed the majority of summer bookings being for families or groups but we are also seeing a growing trend in short-break bookings.
“Given the affordability and flexibility of a self-catering holiday at home coupled with Scotland’s unrivalled and diverse scenery and historical offering, we predict a continuing increase in bookings for 2016 and have already been taking many bookings for the Christmas and New Year period.”
Included among the Sutherland properties which are proving popular is the The Old Laundry sits at Achfary on the west coast. Surrounding the house are thousands of acres of wilderness and mountains and lochs – “truly an extraordinary place,” they say.
The Old Laundry sleeps nine and is available from £1200 per week.
