Store cattle sale at Quoybrae livestock centre hits £3000 top price





Quoybrae, Aberdeen and Northern Marts on Monday sold 1313 store cattle at the show and sale sponsored by the publisher of the John O’Groat Journal.

Bullocks (621) averaged 452.3p and sold to 620.9p per kg for a pen of 306kg British Blue Crosses from Forsie, Bridge of Westfield and £3000 gross for a 762kg British Blue Cross from Brae Edge, Castletown.

Aberdeen Angus bullocks (258) averaged 434.1p and sold to 501.4p per kg and £2460 gross for 641kg from Aghmhor, Station Road.

Heifers (382) averaged 437.6p and sold to 550.8p per kg for a pen of 236kg Limousin crosses from Rhemullen, Dunbeath and £2520 gross for a 568kg Simmental Cross from 11 Lochend, Barrock.

Aberdeen Angus heifers (52) averaged 392.1p and sold to 473.8p per kg for a pen of 382kg from 3 Lochend, Barrock and £2150 gross for a 557kg from Kirkfield, Castletown.

Champion in the Highland News & Media sponsored show and sale was a 550kg Limousin Cross bullock from J & L Mackay, Hillhead, Lybster and achieved £2580 to judge Craig Buchan, Newton of Savoch, Longisde. Reserve was a 547kg Limousin Cross heifer from D & S Webster, Keiss Mains, Keiss and realised £2280 to Ross Bros Ltd.

In the Young Farmers show and sale of overwintered cattle sponsored by A H Mackay, West Greenland and Ross Bremner Transport Ltd, the Overall Champion was a 472kg Charolais heifer, from Sophie Tucker, 21 Smith Terrace, Wick, Bred by A S Budge, Milton Farm, Halkirk and realised £3050 to Smallburn Farms, Plewlands, Duffus.

This Heifer also wins the Highest Gross Margin Heifer of (+£1870) and the Special Prize for best placed Charolais Cross Sired by a Registered Charolais Bull presented by the Scottish and Northern Charolais Club.

The Reserve Champion was a 495kg Limousin Cross Heifer from Sophie Gunn, The Shein, Hill of Forss bred by G Sutherland, The Antlers, Occumster which realised £2500 to the judge. Sophie also wins the best presented and paraded.

The winner of the W & A Geddes Perpetual Trophy for the Best Daily Live Weight Gain of 1.560kg per day and highest gross margin (+£1360) was for a 534kg Limousin Steer from Isla Mackay, Strath Farm, Watten.

The Best Daily Liveweight gain heifer was a 534kg Limousin from William Campbell, Heatherview, Gersa of 1.340 kg per day.
