Start planned on Rogart mart scheme after planning go-ahead
A START is expected to be made later in the year on an ambitious plan to convert the historic Rogart mart into a multi-purpose events space.
Planners have approved a revised application for the project which now includes the installation of a Green Room incorporating toilets, and a kitchen offering refreshments.
Rogart Development Trust, which is driving the project forwards, was granted £131,000 in 2018 towards the purchase of the site and its conversion. It is intended that the refurbished mart would provide space for events such as theatre performances, markets and fairs.
Rogart Community Council were brought up to date with the project’s progress at their meeting last week.
Chairman Frank Roach, a member of Rogart Development Trust, said: “The revised planning application for the mart project has been approved by Highland Council planners.
“The original planning application, which was also approved, was for doing up the mart itself. But to get planning for the Green Room and toilets, the council wanted us to resubmit the entire project.”
He continued: “It (the approval) means that the tender process should be under way soon. It will be advertised in the Northern Times so contractors can bid in.
“All of the contractors will be asked to identify how there could be local involvement with the employment of local tradespeople.
“Construction could start after the summer holidays, from August, and will last for 14 weeks.”
The 1.25 hectare mart site lies in the centre of the village and runs east towards Pittentrail Hall car park. The mart loading bays are beside the car park for the village’s only shop, PO Stores.
The steel-framed mart building, which has brickwork half-way up, lies beyond the loading bay. Its roof contains asbestos and needs to be replaced.
The mart fell into disuse after the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001.
