Silver Rock Foundation helps Golspie pupils with lockdown learning
A SUTHERLAND primary school has been able to purchase digital devices for lockdown learning thanks to a donation from a locally based charity.
Golspie Primary School has been given sufficient funding by the Silver Rock Foundation (SRF) to enable it to buy 10 digital devices.
Head teacher Simon Scott said pupils were delighted at the gift.
The majority of Golspie pupils currently access learning online at home because of the coronavirus pandemic, although the school remains open to vulnerable youngsters and the children of key workers.
Mr Scott said: “Access to online learning is crucial during this difficult time and we are so grateful to our friends at the Silver Rock Foundation for their help.
“Many families struggle to provide suitable devices for their children.
“Highland Council has given us a lot of devices for chidren to borrow and that has been really great.
“However those provided by the Silver Rock Foundation are for the children to own themselves – and there is something rather special about that.”
Mr Scott expressed his thanks to all teachers, school staff, carers and members of the community who are making sure that children are still keeping up with their lessons.
He said: “Hopefully, we will be back to face to face teaching for everyone in the very near future – online learning is great, but is no substitute for the social and emotional development that real life interaction brings – keep up the good work everybody!”
Retired teacher Sheila Robertson, who worked at Golspie Primary School for more than 30 years, is a key player with the Silver Rock Foundation.
She said: “As it is difficult to organise projects in Covid times, this is a way of SRF contributing to the school.”
The Silver Rock Foundation was founded by well-known actor and Golspie resident Jimmy Yuill.
It aims to benefit young people in the Golspie area with funding and experiences to enable talent to flourish. The group was behind a Celebrity Golf Day at Golspie Golf Club and Dunrobin Castle in 2014.
