Shocking lack of treatment for tongue-tied babies
I was very interested to read in a recent issue of the Northern Times about the two Highland mums who had to travel to England for tongue-tie treatment for their babies.
My grandson Finlay was born in Manchester on March 2 and my daughter-in-law struggled to breastfeed him. When he was a day old Finlay was found to be tongue-tied which was causing him a problem feeding. A
s there was a 4-week waiting list for NHS treatment a midwife suggested getting the procedure done privately. Within a couple of days his parents were able to get an appointment at a clinic in nearby Hale, Cheshire, where Finlay’s tongue-tie was assessed as ‘severe’.
The snip of his tongue tissue by a midwife was quick and seemed relatively painless and was an immediate success.
I’m pleased to say my grandson is now thriving but I found it shocking that there was no immediate NHS treatment for a newborn at the Manchester hospital especially as it seemed such a quick procedure that didn’t even need a doctor to be present.
I was also astonished that the two Highland mums had to travel so far afield for treatment.
