‘Selfless commitment and courage’ of East Sutherland lifeboat volunteers recognised in King Charles III Coronation Medal presentation
Sutherland’s Lord-Lieutenant Patrick Marriott has urged people to wear their medals “whenever they can”.
Major General Marriott was speaking at a ceremony to present King Charles III Coronation medals to seven members of East Sutherland Rescue Association (ESRA) at the Cadogan Lifeboat Station at Dornoch beach yesterday evening.
“People are reluctant to wear medals but It is really important to wear your own medals and those of your forebears as well, “ he said.
“Medals show past examples of good deeds or good service and society needs examples, especially now when society is in a difficult place.”
Major General Marriott said the medals awarded to ESRA members were for service and two values stood out - selfless commitment and courage.

“You are all volunteers and you do this out of the kindness of your hearts,” he said. “Most important is courage. It takes courage to go out in a boat at night when the rain is pouring down and the wind is howling. Courage is the most important virtue of all. Without courage we can do nothing.”
The King Charles III Coronation Medal is being awarded to members of the emergency services who have been in paid, retained or voluntary service for five years on the coronation date of May 6, 2023.
