The individual awards of £250 will bolster 200 local groups throughout Scotland, allowing them to make small improvements to their local environment. The list includes 13 from the Highlands.

The Community Grant Scheme is funded from the proceeds of the carrier bag charge collected by Tesco in Scotland, allowing Scottish communities to benefit from the 5p charge for single use carrier bags that came into force on 20th October last year.

Successful groups include local neighbourhood/friends groups, local volunteer associations and not-for-profit bodies all using the award proceeds to create cleaner, greener and happier places. The grants will support a wide range of local environment improvement projects including litter prevention and removal, outdoor reuse projects and imaginative planting.

To meet the Community Grant Scheme criteria, the projects had to demonstrate the following:

  • Be centred on local action to improve the local environment;
  • Delivered in an environmentally sustainable manner;
  • Involve and benefit the community; and
  • Be volunteer led
