COMEDIAN Ross Noble popped up to east Sutherland to film part of his Freewheeling television programme yesterday – after being tweeted about La Mirage restaurant in Helmsdale.

The series allows Ross to travel around the country on his motorbike, going anywhere purely on whim, following ideas of places or people to visit sent to him via Twitter.

Steve Anderson of Glasgow had eaten at La Mirage last year when staying with his wife’s aunty, Louise Mackay of Brora, and was so impressed with the Barbara Cartland-themed restaurant that he thought it would be an ideal place for Ross to visit.

After tweeting him, he contacted Louise as well – who in turn tweeted the comedian and invited him to visit the Northern Times offices, where she works as advertisement supervisor.

Fearing he might miss the building in Golspie’s Main Street, she also put a poster on the outside wall saying: “Ross Noble – Come on in, the kettle is on!” with an arrow pointing to the front door.

And she tweeted a photo of it to Ross to make sure he wouldn’t pass by.

It did the trick and he arrived at the NT on Wednesday evening, and was filmed looking through last week’s Raggie with editor Alison Cameron and adding his own irreverent comments on the contents!

He had signed the poster which Louise had put up and kindly left her a pair of his socks.

Unfortunately, by the time he left the NT, someone had taken both poster and socks....

It was then north to Helmsdale where he spent time walking around the village, chatting to people before entering La Mirage, declaring it “well worth the visit”. He spoke to diners and owner Pam Wakefield, who gave him a history of the famous restaurant, and thanked him for visiting. Then he was on his motorbike and away – to wherever the next Tweet might take him.

The Ross Noble Freewheeling series is scheduled to be broadcast on Dave in December/January.
