Rogart Mart to host 'Letters to the Earth' exhibition and workshops

A UNIQUE exhibition, described as a “conversation about the environmental crisis happening around the world”, is being hosted by Rogart Mart next weekend.

Letters to the Earth Between Despair and Hope is running for three days from Friday to Sunday, June 2- 4.

Lairg & District Learning Centre (LDLC) worked in partnership with students from Orkney College UHI to bring the exhibition to Sutherland, with funding support from the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub.

It features the work of 10 students from UHI’s Contemporary Art and Archaeology courses.

The work on display explores themes of folklore, language, our relationships with the land, an appreciation of nature, the impact of hydro power in the Highlands, food production, crofting, archaeology and more.

A number of workshops and activities are being held in conjunction with the exhibition, including poetry writing with Cait O’Neill McCullagh; an introduction to artist’s books with Suzie MacKenzie; a foraging walk with Emma Armstrong; and drop-in contemporary archaeology activities.

Workshops can be booked via Lairg & District Learning Centre’s Eventbrite page.

A spokesman for Lairg & District Learning Centre said: “The learning opportunities build on the LDLC’s work as part of the Highland Community Waste Partnership and previous Climate Action Fund projects focused on sustainability and forming a deeper connection with nature.”

The Rogart exhibition is part of a wider Letters to the Earth environmental project sparked by Ontario based professional artist and University of the Highlands and Islands student Carmel Brennan.

She invited people from across the globe to write a “letter to the earth” and create a piece of work addressing the environmental crisis.

Letters to the Earth exhibitions are to be shown at venues across the UK, Canada and other parts of the world throughout this year and next.

The Rogart exhibition is free to attend and open to everyone from 10am-4pm across the three days. An official opening event was held yesterday evening.
