A RECENTLY retired head teacher has been appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Sutherland.
Dawn McKenzie was head teacher of Brora Primary School and latterly cluster head of both Brora and Helmsdale primary schools. She recently retired after her 33-year career in education.
She received her commission as a Deputy Lieutenant on Wednesday, November 9, and was congratulated on her appointment by Lord-Lieutenant Major General Patrick Marriott.
She joins the lieutenancy team of Lord-Lieutenant Patrick Marriott, Vice Lord-Lieutenant Kim Tulloch and Deputy Lieutenants David Grant, Frances Gunn, Christine Mackay, Sheila Stewart and Catriona Whitfield.
Deputy Lieutenant McKenzie gained her Bachelor of Education in 1989 and in the same year began her teaching career at Brora Primary School.
There, she went from teacher to principal teacher and then to head teacher. She retired from teaching in 2022 and is looking forward to more time working the croft and garden with her husband Iain, and spending more time with family and friends. Dawn and Iain have two grown up daughters, Kirsty and Megan.
Ms McKenzie said: "I am really honoured to be asked to take on the role of Deputy Lieutenant and I look forward to working with the Lord Lieutenancy team. They have already made me very welcome."
