Portmahomack 16th century ‘castle’ for sale
A 16th century “castle” in Portmahomack has been put on the market with offers of over £320,000 invited.
The grade B listed Little Tarrel Castle is a three-bedroom home which has been “sympathetically restored” over the years, with a full restoration having taken place in the 1980s.
According to records, the property was built in 1559 by Alexander Ross — the legitimated son of Walter Ross of Balnagown, chief of Clan Ross and the eighth Laird of Balnagown.
According to the particulars, the one-of-a-kind building retains many of its traditional features, such as fine stonework, fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, timber beams, thick wooden doors, original shot holes, gun loops and arrow slits.

However, the property has an F-grade EPC rating — but it does have the potential to reach a C-grade rating, according to details shared with would-be buyers.
Estate agents for the property, Strutt and Parker, said: “Little Tarrel Castle is a characterful ‘B’ listed small fortalice originally built in the 16th century, which has been sympathetically restored over the years to offer a range of spacious and comfortable accommodation arranged in an L-shape formation over three floors.”
Little Tarrel Castle was first listed in April 2024, looking for offers over £340,000, but was reduced to £320,000 in May. View the full listing on www.struttandparker.com/properties/portmahomack
