PICTURES: Lairg Gala Week off to ‘excellent start’
Lairg Gala Week got off to an “excellent start” this past weekend.
Open bowls, a craft market and a vintage vehicle display kept everyone entertained in the morning before the opening ceremony of this year’s event took place on Saturday July 6.
The vintage car show, which was held at the Lairg Community Centre car park, was deemed “a massive success” by organisers.
Festivities were opened by local resident Eilidh Matheson at 3pm with the crowning of Gala Queen, Lucy Mackenzie, along with Gala attendants Karmen Vinni and Christina Graham, who both attend Lairg Nursery.
Sutherland Schools and Sutherland Caledonian pipe bands capably provided the soundtrack to the afternoon.
The day was rounded off with its usual family dance, which was “very well supported” with everyone in attendance noted as having a great time.
Gala Week events have continued into the week, with a kids roller disco, football kickabout and adult dominos on Sunday, rounded off by the ever-popular car treasure hunt and a pool and darts competition in the evening.
Monday saw the holding of the Lairg Gala sports day at Ferry Croft football pitch, with prizes won across the board. A fishing competition for the kids followed.
Junior poor and darts on Tuesday was followed by an entertaining north-west Sutherland football league match between Lairg Rovers and Helmsdale United, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the evening, a night of adult bingo ended with a jackpot of winners totalling £1670.
