PICTURES: Fitness first as county town finally has a gym facility after years of demand
A GYM has finally opened in Sutherland’s county town after years of demand for the facility.
Silverback Gym, which also operates in Tain, opened its doors at Dornoch Hub last Saturday, May 1.
The hub is housed in the town’s former police station which was purchased in 2020 by Dornoch Area Community Interest Company (DACIC) with support from the Scottish Land Fund.
The gym has been developed first in the former police station garages, supported by funding from Beatrice Windfarm Ltd with match funding from Silverback in gym equipment.
An open day was held from 10am-4pm last Saturday to allow the public to see round the facility Fi with those who had signed up for membership able to use the equipment from 4.30pm.
Jim Gagan, who runs the gym with his wife Ruth, said: "Thank you Dornoch community for such a great welcome on our open day. We are so excited that Silverback is the gym to bring this much needed facility to Dornoch."
Joan Bishop of DACIC said: "We are delighted to see the first part of the Dornoch Hub open and look forward to welcoming tenants into the offices and workshops in the main building later this month.
"The main reception will house the visitor centre, and the community room at the back of the building will be available for a range of activities with funding in place for youth club, coding club, art and craft workshops and cookery sessions.
"Once Covid restrictions are eased we will hold an open day. The extensive refurbishment has been supported by funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, SSE Renewables, the National Lottery, the Town Centre Fund and Highland Council Developers' Fund."
