A new tattoo and piercing business has just opened its doors in Sutherland’s county town.

The new business is run by Justin and Gabbie Telford who moved to Sutherland from their previous home in Cornwall.

Justin began his artistic career as an exhibition designer in the 1980s and moved into graphic design, conceptual illustration and television graphics.

He said: “I stumbled into tattooing in 2005, when it was beginning to move away from the traditional ‘biker parlour’ and become recognised as a true art form.

Justin opened his first studio with his wife Gabbie in 2012 and in 2015 they were voted Best in Cornwall by rating website threetoprated.com, a title they held for nine consecutive years until they closed the studio.

Justin said: “In early 2023, we made the difficult decision to close the studio after an opportunity arose to fulfil a lifelong dream and relocate to the Highlands.

“The Painted Man is the culmination of many decades of artistic and business expertise and a celebration of the coming together of two great Celtic nations, the Scots and the Cornish.”

The Painted Man offers a bespoke tattoo service in any style. Justin specialises in cover-ups and also offers laser tattoo removal and body piercing.

He said: “One of the things that sets The Painted Man apart from the competition is the way we work with our clients.

“We start the process with a free consultation, to make sure that your design is the best it can be and that all your decisions are informed and guided to give you the best possible outcome.

“We ensure that every client is given the opportunity to see their artwork before their appointment, so that they can make any necessary changes. In short, there are no surprises and the client is always the most important person in the room.”
