AN Inverness firm which has worked on large scale building projects near and far has landed a prestigious award.

Mott MacDonald has been named Engineering Consultant of the Year at the 2011 Building Awards, which took place at London’s Grosvenor Hotel.

Alastair Nelson, the company’s business development director for buildings, who lives and works in the Highlands, received the award from comedian Dara O’Briain who hosted the awards ceremony.

The firm has had input into major projects such as Hong Kong International Airport, while closer to home it has worked on facilities for NHS Highland at Raigmore Hospital and for the Eden Court Theatre redevelopment in Inverness.

Steven Robertson, Mott MacDonald’s Inverness office manager, said: "This award shows Mott MacDonald to be a true industry leader. We are delighted that our expertise and the hard work of our staff have been recognised and are pleased to be able to deliver these services directly into the Highlands from our office in Inverness. Our leading reputation in the power and utilities sectors is also helping economic development in the Highlands."

Mott MacDonald was formed at the beginning of 1989 after the merger of two long-established practices Mott, Hay & Anderson, established in 1902, and Sir M MacDonald & Partners, established in 1922.

Now a global management, engineering and development consultancy, Mott MacDonald delivers savings and adds value to major projects around the world, including Hong Kong International Airport, where it is providing full design consultancy and construction support services. This project, which will include a new midfield terminal, is helping to increase passenger capacity at the airport by 10 per cent.

The consultancy also delivered structural, civil and geotechnical engineering on the Manchester Joint Hospitals project which brought together five hospitals on a single site. Mott MacDonald’s design maximised construction speed and safety while minimising disruption to ongoing hospital operations.

The award judges commended Mott MacDonald’s ‘ongoing pursuit of innovation, high standards of customer care, sustainability, staff training and welfare, collaborative working and corporate responsibility’.

The firm also won 120 awards in 2010 and the consultancy was also named in the top 15 of the prestigious 2011 Sunday Times Top 25 Best Big Companies to Work For Survey for the fifth consecutive year.
