Maree Todd has flagged up the Scottish Government’s record on new homes, saying it represents “a significant step forward in addressing the housing crisis in Highland”.

The SNP MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross welcomed figures showing that 8573 affordable and social homes have been completed since 2007 in the Highland Council area.

Latest data show that almost 137,000 have been built across Scotland, with 97,099 socially rented homes completed. She added that this equates to 40 per cent more than those built in England and 70 per cent more than Wales.

The figures indicate that 5219 social homes and 3354 affordable homes have been built in Highland since the SNP entered government 18 years ago.

Ms Todd said this demonstrates the progress being made in tackling the country’s housing emergency, with an investment of £768 million in affordable housing across Scotland over the next year.

“These latest figures show a significant step forward in addressing the housing crisis in Highland,” she said. “I am proud that Scotland continues to invest more per person than any other UK nation in measures to tackle homelessness and help people remain in their own homes.

“From building more homes to tackling the root causes of homelessness, we know how important housing is to building a better, more prosperous Scotland – especially while progress has remained so stagnant elsewhere in the UK.

“This is just another way the SNP is delivering for Highland under John Swinney’s leadership.”
