THE Mahler Players return to Dornoch Cathedral tomorrow night with Mahler – and a seasonal note for spring.

The 23-piece group of Highland professional musicians is led by musical director Tomas Leakey.

The Players want to reach out to an audience which might be new to classical music and the Mahler Symphony No 1 might be perfect for them.

Most people would recognise one of the tunes at the heart of the third movement as folk round Frere Jacques!

Last year the Players began their two-year programme of concerts – Mahler In Miniature – featuring some of the composer’s major works, arranged for a smaller ensemble like their own.

As well as Mahler’s symphony, the group will perform the composer’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs Of The Wayfarer) which shared two melodies with Symphony No 1. Baritone Douglas Nairne– the founder of Opera Bohemia which has toured in the north – is the guest soloist.

The last part of the programme is American composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

The group will also play at Strathpeffer Pavilion on Saturday. The concerts are at 8pm.

Tickets are on sale at The Dornoch Bookshop at £12, £10 concessions and £5 for under-26s.
