Local views sought over Dornoch Common Good land sale

Dornoch residents are being invited to give their views on a proposal to sell a small piece of the town's Common Good land.

Highland Council launched a community consultation exercise on Tuesday, May 31, to gauge local opinion on the disposal of the 55 metre squared parcel of land.

Dornoch has an extensive area of Common Good land.

The local authority is required under the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015 to consult local people before disposing of Common Good land.

The ground in question lies to the front of the property known as Tigh Ruaraidh at 8 Well Street, Littletown, Dornoch.

A background report states that the area of land subject to the consultation was Common Good ground and had never formed part of the house title.

However, it had been used for a "significant period of time" to access the property, as a garden and also as parking.

The report continues: "Past owners have fenced off the land and used it as garden ground and for parking.

"A request has been made by the owner of the property for the council to consider the sale of the land. This would enable a complete title to the extent of the property used to be acquired.

"Negotiations have taken place and a proposed purchase price of £8000 has been agreed. Any sums received from the sale of this piece of land, if approved, would be paid into Dornoch Common Good Fund.

"The price reflects the fact that the land has development value in addition to use as a garden and for access, although there are no current plans for development."

The full consultation document on the proposed sale can be accessed on Highland Council's website. Visit www.highland.gov.uk and search using the term 'consultation'.

Written responses should be submitted by a deadline of July 28 and can be submitted by email to: common.good@highland.gov.uk.

Alternatively, send by post to: Sara Murdoch, The Highland Council HQ, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness, IV3 5NX.

All representations will be taken into account in reaching a decision. Reresentations, responses and any final decision will be published on the council's website.
