Last Witch of Scotland book breaks records at Dornoch Bookshop
A HIGHLAND author is a record-breaker at a Sutherland book shop.
Philip Paris’s new historical fiction book ‘The Last Witch of Scotland’ has only been out for five months but has already sold 500 copies at Dornoch Book Shop.
Antony Hope, who runs the book shop with his wife Maggie, said: “We sold our 500th copy of the book last Tuesday. It has broken all records for Dornoch Bookshop - it is a terrific read.”
The Last Witch of Scotland was inspired by the extraordinary story of Janet Horne, the last person in Britain to be executed for witchcraft in Dornoch in 1727.

The book is the result of years of research into the Scottish witchcraft trails and reimagines how Janet Horne and her daughter came to be arrested and tried for witchcraft.
Mr Paris, who is best known for his books about Orkney’s famous Italian chapel, built by POWs during World War II, spoke about his latest book in an author’s session at Scotland’s Indie Book Festival, held in Othin House, Helmsdale, from Setpember 8-10.
Mr Paris said: “One of the aspects of writing that excites me the most is to find an important historical event that no one has taken as the centre storyline of a novel.”
