Landslide at Kildonan
Part of the North Highland railway line was closed last night due to a landslide caused by flooding.
Firefighters were alerted to the landslip, just north of Kildonan station, near Helmsdale about 5.30pm, and Network Rail engineers were also called out to deal with the damage.
Two train services yesterday between Inverness and Wick were affected as a result.
A section of the A897 road at Kildonan Lodge was also closed off by police due to the landslip and flooding.
A Network Rail spokeswoman said: “It is likely that train services will be affected today. In the meantime, passengers should check with the train operator for alternative travel arrangements.”
Earlier yesterday, firefighters form Helmsdale were called out to tackle flooding affecting two properties in the Kildonan area.
A fire service spokeswoman said they received a call to deal with “severe localised flooding” at about 4.30pm.
She said that the crew of four worked to divert water away from the homes and that they were helped by a local resident with a digger.
