A junior writing contest has been launched by the newly formed Caithness and Sutherland Literary Association.

The competition is open to anyone who will be 12 or under by the closing date of May 31.

This challenge is to write a short story of between 500 and 1500 words from the perspective of a family cat, a dog or a garden bird.

Eoghan Mhor, a former teacher who is now tutoring online, is the driving force behind the association.

He explained: “If the student has seen the movie The Secret Life of Pets, or Cats & Dogs, they may have a better understanding of what is being asked. The story must be original, however, and not copied from a movie.”

The prize will be £50 worth of books of the winner’s choosing.

Application forms explaining more about the competition can be obtained by emailing the association at Cand S_LiteraryAssociation@hotmail.com

All entries will need to be submitted by post or email by May 31. The winner will be announced in the first week of June.

As well as running an annual writing competition for primary-age pupils, the aims of Caithness and Sutherland Literary Association are to organise a book club to read and discuss classic literature; encourage libraries to have a “classics collection”; and foster a love of literature.
