Jamie Stone highlights need for 'proper support' on MS
Jamie Stone has highlighted the need for people living with multiple sclerosis to be "properly supported" by their government.
He said the process of accessing Adult Disability Payment – for those who have a disability or long-term health condition that affects their everyday life – should be as straightforward as possible.
Mr Stone was speaking after a parliamentary event hosted by the national charity the MS Society.
More than 130,000 people in the UK have MS, with 130 diagnosed each week.
MS is a condition where the immune system attacks the coating that protects the nerves. Symptoms are different for everybody but can often be invisible, and they can fluctuate from day to day.
Mr Stone, the Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: “MS can be a debilitating and isolating disease which poses lifelong battles for those living with it. That is why it is important for the process of receiving Adult Disability Payment to be as simple and accessible as possible.
“In Scotland, the prevalence of MS is notably higher than in other countries. It is imperative that those living with MS are properly supported by their government.”
