The former leader of the council's opposition Independents has unexpectedly quit the group.

Jaci Douglas said tonight: “While I remain committed to the principles of independent councillors as the best way to run local government, I feel that my continued presence within the Independent Group will be a complicating factor given the recent election of Councillor Margaret Davidson as the new leader. This is a new phase for the group and I feel that I should step down immediately so the group can move forward as quickly and clearly as possible."

Councillor Douglas has been a member of the group for eight years and represents Strathspey and Badenoch.

She was recently made co-leader with Councillor Carolyn Wilson.

She will continue in her role as ward councillor.
