‘It’s a fantastic facility’: Homegrown footballer opens Helmsdale’s £500,000 new MUGA

Helmsdale’s new £500,000 multi-use games area (MUGA) was officially opened last Friday.

Ross County Football Club manager Don Cowie, who hails from the port, cut the ribbon at a short ceremony, assisted by Hearts legend John Robertson, the former director of Ross County Football Club.

Mr Cowie said the MUGA was a “fantastic facility” of which the community should be proud.

Helmsdale and District Development Trust initiated and developed the ambitious MUGA project with funding from a number of charitable and funding organisations.

Trust chairperson Ruth Whittaker said it had been a “marathon of perseverance” to make the MUGA plan a reality.

She said the Trust’s first community consultation over a decade ago had shown that there was strong enthusiasm for a multi-use facility that would allow all ages to enjoy a range of sports from football to pickleball.
