World Book Day was launched by UNESCO in 1995 as a celebration of books and reading, and is now marked in over 100 countries.

The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland was held in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the joy of reading. It is now celebrated every year on the first Thursday in March.

Each child in full-time education is given a voucher to spend on books. The tokens are distributed through schools, early years settings and a range of children’s magazines.

Principal teacher Lisa Mackenzie said: “The children dressed up in their pyjamas and came back to school for a fun-filled evening of bedtime stories and reading ‘by the campfire’. They also enjoyed hot chocolate.

“Everyone had a great time and many parents stayed to enjoy some of our lovely school books with their child too.”

World Book Day is a charity funded by publishers and booksellers. Visit: worldbookday.com
