Thousands of Highland residents were without electricity on Hogmanay after a string of power cuts in the north.

Sixteen separate power loss incidents were being reported across Sutherland, Caithness and Ross-shire at 8am.

In all, more than 1800 individual homes and businesses were affected in communities that included Altandhu, Elphin, Clachtoll, Rhiconich, Durness, Altnaharra, Coldbackie, Bettyhill, Reay, Thurso, Kinbrace, Forsinard, Halkirk and Latheron, among others.

The power cuts come amid several weather warnings in the region, with a yellow warning for rain and snow active in Sutherland, Caithness and Ross-shire at the time of writing, and another yellow warning for snow on New Year’s Day and January 2 due to come into force at midnight tonight.
