North Coast packed lunch project ends as schools resume
A 10-week project which saw around 1800 packed lunches delivered to primary school pupils on the north coast, has now been wound down with the start of the new academic year.
The project was initiated and co-ordinated by Joanna Mackenzie, who runs the Store Cafe and Laundry at Bettyhill. Funding came from Wildland Ltd, the company run by local landowner Anders Holch Povlsen.
The use of Bettyhill Public Hall was given free of charge for the storage of bulk food and the assembly of the lunches. Volunteers packed ‘Bizzibags’ with educational materials as well as food.
Ninety per cent of those eligible – primary and nursery pupils attending Melvich, Farr and Tongue primaries – took up the offer of the twice weekly lunches. Delivery was across the entire North Coast Campus area.
