Hand-cyclist Jack in record bid
A BRORA student is among a team of UK hand-cyclists hoping to make their way into the Guinness Book of Records.
Jack Sutherland (22), Victoria Road, is taking part in the first ever hand-cycle relay the length of Britain.
All the participants have some form of disability which prevents them from riding diamond frame, upright bikes.
Jack, the son of Brora building contractor Richard Sutherland and his wife Tracy, lost the use of his legs as a result of a road accident some years ago.
The LeJog (Land’s End to John O’Groats) ride is a fundraiser for the Matt Hampson Foundation which provides support to anyone suffering from serious injury or disability arising from any cause.
Riders, who will individually undertake stretches of up to 60 miles, will hand over to each other a flag with the foundation’s motto on it – Get Busy Living.
The first of the 20 riders rode off from Land’s End on Monday, last week. The aim is to reach John O’Groats by next Monday.
Jack, a fabrication and welding student at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), is set to hand-cycle around 53 miles from Inveran to Kinbrace on Sunday, September 4.
A keen hand-cyclist, he can regularly be seen riding along the scenic Strath Brora road.
His mum said that he should have no difficulty completing the distance.
She said: "The riders have all day to complete their stretch – it is not timed. Jack has done that kind of mileage before, although not in this country but on holiday abroad."
