Hamish studied at the Commercial College in Glasgow where he completed his London School of Economics degree. He stayed in Queen Margaret Drive and frequently enjoyed the company of fellow Highlanders in the Snaffle Bit.

It was here, in Glasgow, that Hamish met Dorothy Holmes in Kersland Street while he was looking for girls to join a party in his flat!

While a student, he worked in a toilet paper factory in Sweden and forever after would use the Swedish “ingenting mer” when he had had enough!

Following his graduation Hamish worked for Dexion Shelving and Harbilt trucks.

Hamish then grasped the opportunity to lecture in Business and Economics in Thurso Technical College, taking with him his new wife, Dorothy, and her nine-year-old daughter, Julie, to whom he became a wonderful dad.

He remained at the college for 26 years, rising to the position of Deputy Principal, but during this time his most senior position became that of Grampa Dunnet to Amy and Hannah.

After retiring from the college, Hamish felt that he still had something to offer the world of work so took the position of relief mobile librarian, safe in the knowledge that this would be five weeks work per year.

This turned into a happy, week on/week off, eight-year career where he was most appreciated and covered all of Sutherland, which he loved.

Ably assisted by Dorothy, as chief sandwich maker and van cleaner every Thursday evening, Hamish thoroughly enjoyed his library swansong.

Apart from his family, the other love in his life was St Johnstone, faithfully following them home and away to destinations such as Bratislava, Monaco and Methil! His only bugbear remained his son-in-law, Colin, who continued to torment him about the rivalry between Partick Thistle and St Johnstone.

His happiest St Johnstone day was last year’s Scottish Cup win against Dundee United and his St Johnstone buddies were represented at the funeral.

Hamish was first and last a people person who loved nothing more than a blether with everyone he met.

Pall bearers were: Colin Bradley, Douglas Henderson, David Allan, Neil Ross, Norman Henderson, Magnus Mathewson, Chris Morrison, Hugh Boyd (son-in-law, brother-in-law, nephew, cousins and friends).
