Good turnout of volunteers for Carbisdale Forest trails maintenance day

Twenty-four volunteers turned out in good weather last Saturday to help the Culrain Hall Committee maintain the paths in Carbisdale Forest, with people travelling from as far away as Rogart to show their support for this small community.

Armed with a selection of hand tools, the volunteers split into two groups to tackle the pressing projects of the day.

One group set about clearing the heather and foliage from a key path up to View Rock, which provides a fantastic view looking east to the Dornoch Firth, and managed to reinstate much of the path.

The other group worked to rebuild the track beyond the Montrose Bridge, which crosses the Culrain Burn near the beautiful lochan in the forest.

This was heavy work that required stones to be repositioned and the original path cleared.

The volunteers returned to Culrain Hall at 2pm, where committee members Tom and Sue Tomlinson provided homemade soups with fresh baguettes for lunch.

Hall chairperson Graham Charge said "It was a beautiful day to be out in the forest working, and I'm pleased everybody seems to have enjoyed themselves, especially the youngsters, whose enthusiasm was great to see.”

The Culrain & District Hall Committee has a Path Management Agreement with Forestry and Land Scotland and organises a number of trail clearing days throughout the year. Volunteers are always welcome.
