Golspie's Bethany enjoys World Cup netball in Australia
Bethany Sutherland’s hopes of being in a Scottish netball squad which lifts the World Cup, were dashed when the national team lost 71-24 to Jamaica in their third and final Pool B game in Sydney.
Bethany (18), from Golspie, is the youngest member of the squad, and had the thrill of flying out to Australia to take part in the World Cup, which finishes on Sunday.
Scotland previously lost to England 61-19 on Friday but beat Samoa 47-36 on Saturday.
The third-place Pool B finish meant Scotland went through to the play-offs to determine their finishing spot – between 5th and 16th place.
But today, they defeated Sri Lanka 59-27, following up on a victory against Barbados 37-34, in a very tight game yesterday.
Hopes are now high on improving their world ranking of 11.
Bethany, a former Golspie High School pupil, moved to Glasgow after being selected to play for Scotland in the World Cup, so that she could attend training sessions.
Prior to that, she used to undertake the eight-hour trip to Glasgow for training every second week, often arriving home at about 1.30am and going to school a few hours later!
She was the first player to receive a Netball Scotland Future Stars award last year, a programme which supports talented young players.
The six-foot tall teenager, who plays both goal and wing defence, has a great pedigree though – her mum Pat is a former England internationalist.
