Funding boost for domestic abuse support services in Caithness and Sutherland
Caithness and Sutherland Women’s Aid (CASWA) and its sister project, the Gift Project, have received a welcome boost of £1,334.
The two groups have benefited from a fundraising art and prosecco afternoon and a golf competition held at Royal Dornoch Golf Club.
CASWA, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, supports women, children, and young people in Caithness and Sutherland who have experienced domestic abuse.
The volunteer-run Gift Project provides essential items such as clothing and toiletries to those supported by CASWA and their families.
The art and prosecco afternoon on Friday, February 21, was organised by Lady Captain Rosemary Muschamp and members of her committee and raised £869 for the Gift Project.
Annie MacDonald, who runs the Gift Project, said: “I am completely overwhelmed by this valuable support. It will be immensely helpful to purchase essential personal items to support women, children and young people.”
Rosemary Muschamp said: “It was a pleasure to be able to contribute in some way. The ladies enjoyed it very much as a pre-season social fundraiser.”
An alternate shot match play golf competition a few days later was organised by professional golf students Amy Mangen and Louise Milligan from the Dornoch Campus of the University of the Highlands and Islands as part of their work for an events module.
This is the second year in a row that students from the Dornoch campus have chosen CASWA as the beneficiary of a fundraising event.
CASWA representatives supported the students in planning the golf contest and gave a talk on the day about their work
The event raised £480 which will be used to support CASWA’s work locally.
CASWA deputy manager Emma Fraser said: “The event raised a fantastic sum for CASWA and provided us with an invaluable opportunity to raise awareness amongst students and members of the important work that we do locally and the reality of domestic abuse.”
Ms Fraser added: “CASWA would like to thank Amy and Louise for all their work on the golf competition as well as everyone who took part on the day.We would also like to thank Rosemary and her committee for raising such a fantastic amount for our sister project.”
CASWA’s theme for 2025 is ‘A Light in the Dark’ and there are plans to mark the anniversary throughout the year. To keep up to date with events, visit the group’s social media page.
