Former Royal Navy chief chaplain appointed a deputy lieutenant for Sutherland
The Lord Lieutenancy team in Sutherland has been strengthened with the appointment of a new deputy lieutenant.
Lord-Lieutenant Patrick Marriott has announced the appointment of the Venerable John Green, a former Church of England priest and resident of Drumbeg, as deputy lieutenant.
Green (71), who grew up in London’s East End, in the heart of the Docklands, has had an impressive career which has seen him rise to become the lead chaplain in the Royal Navy.
He began his working life as a project engineer with Thorn Lighting Ltd before becoming a student at Lincoln Theological College. He was ordained in 1983 and began his ministry career in Watford and St Albans, where he was involved with a number of local groups, including the Sea Cadets.
Green joined the Royal Navy in 1991 as a naval chaplain and served for 19 years with assignments on HMS Sultan, Portsmouth, Excellent, Ark Royal and Collingwood.
He was appointed Chaplain to the Fleet and Director General of the Naval Chaplaincy Service in 2006, retiring in 2010. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2010 New Year Honours list.
Green became Associate Minister at St Mary Magdalen, Chapelfields, in the Diocese of Coventry in 2013, a post which he relinquished when he retired in 2017.

He and his wife Jan moved to Drumbeg in 2019, and he has come out of retirement to help the Scottish Episcopal Church in the area. He is a member of the Sutherland branch of the Royal Naval Association.
Green is already helping the Sutherland Lieutenancy with its new ‘Memorials and Graves Project’, which aims to commemorate, refurbish and maintain a number of neglected sites in Sutherland. He officiated at the recent commemoration of the X11 Submarine Flotilla Memorial at Kylesku.
Green, whose family includes two sons, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, has had a life-long love of radio and is a licensed amateur radio operator. He also creates music in a home studio. He and his wife enjoy observing and learning about the wildlife in Assynt.
Lord Lieutenant Patrick Marriott now heads a team of 10, comprising Vice-Lord Lieutenant Kim Tulloch, Dornoch, and nine deputy lieutenants who are geographically spread throughout the county.
The deputy lieutenants are John Green, Drumbeg; Frances Gunn, Tongue; David MacAskill, Lochinver; Neil MacDonald, Scourie; Christine Mackay, Ardgay; Dawn McKenzie, Brora; Sheila Stewart, Lairg; and Catriona Whitfield, Helmsdale.
