THE former Lady Ross Hotel in Ardgay was last night damaged by fire – for the second time in ten years.

Firefighters battled through the night to control the blaze at the derelict building.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue service confirmed they were called to the incident shortly after 10.50 last night and were tackling the fire until 2.50 this morning.

Crews from Bonar Bridge, Dornoch, Lairg and two appliances from Inverness were all called to the scene.

The building suffered extensive damage to part of the roof as four main jets battled to contain the flames.

Police were also on site and said this morning that they were treating the fire as "non-suspicious".

Ironically, the building is due to be demolished in the autumn. The local Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust are spearheading plans to redevelop the site on which it stands into a village square bordered by a terrace of four houses, car parking and a business hub.

The building is currently owned by the Highland Council.

  • In April 2006 – when the hotel was still functioning and there was also a post office and shop within the complex – firefighters attended a blaze on the ground floor. There was partial damage.
