Formed as a result of the successful Art n' Blether programme in Helmsdale after a few discussions and a couple of meetings, the Brora Art Group now meet weekly at a studio belonging to one of their members, every Monday.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Our membership is made up of a range of artists who possess differing levels of experience and confidence, but they all share a love of painting, creating.

"They all have a desire to become better artists. One very important aspect of what we do is to support each other’s development by giving advice and making suggestions.

"With no designated tutor or leader, our approach is best described as 'organic'. Recently, various topics have been suggested which run for a few weeks, such as 'festival' and 'window'. Taking that topic, we can choose our own idea and medium. We have had a session run by one of our members who has a lot of expertise painting on silk, and this was a new medium for most of us. At present we are working on our drawing skills with two still lifes which we will go on to paint."

The group's enthusiasm led to the idea of an exhibition to give them a focus, and help them to complete works and finish them to a higher standard.

The spokesperson added: "We have had advice on how to prepare, price and present our work from the few group members who have experience exhibiting.

"We are now working to develop a social media presence to advertise our event. It feels exciting and positive and we are both looking forward to and feeling anxious about our exhibition.

"Everyone has a different role, an unintended but very positive outcome of our plans is that group cohesion is very strong and the art group has real purpose."

If a success, the group hopes to make the exhibition an annual event.
