Entries open for highly-anticipated Highland sheep show
Highland sheep breeders will have the opportunity of showing and selling pairs of ewe hoggs at a special multi-breed show and sale to be held in the Highlands.
This year's event on June 11, that is held biennially, organised by NSA Scottish Region, is being hosted by the Brooke family at Midfearn Farm, near Ardgay, and is set to attract a large attendance of sheep farmers from all over Scotland and further afield.
The show and sale of pairs of ewe hoggs has been a highlight of NSA Highland Sheep and NSA Scot Sheep events, since its introduction at the first NSA Highland Sheep at Dingwall Mart in 2013.
Euan Campbell, chairperson of the event’s organising committee, says: “The NSA Highland Sheep show and sale will provide an opportunity for breeders to show-case their top ewe hoggs.” Euan who is a seed specialist with Watson Seeds, based at Conon Bridge, continues: “At previous NSA Highland Sheep events, the sale has attracted keen interest from buyers, with four-figure prices being achieved”.
The sale, which will be conducted by Dingwall and Highland Marts, is open to ewe hoggs born in 2024 with either MV or non-MV accreditation and will feature seven classifications — Mules, North Country Cheviot (Hill), North Country Cheviot (Park), Scottish Blackface, any other native breed, any other Continental breed and any cross-bred.
The entry fee is £25 (plus VAT) per pair with prize money of £50 for a first, £25 for second and £10 for third on offer, plus £100 for the overall champion. The closing date for entries is May 2.
All sheep entered for the show must be offered for the sale and prize winners not sold will forfeit their prize money. Sellers may offer to take ewe hoggs home after the sale and buyers will have 14 days to collect their purchases from the seller’s farm.

“Entries for the show and sale may have to be limited so I would urge prospective exhibitors to get their entries in early,” adds Mr Campbell.
