East Sutherland community councils seek meeting after shock over plans for new high-voltage pylon line

Community councils in East Sutherland are seeking to meet SSEN Transmission to discuss its proposal for a new, high-voltage, overhead pylon line running through Sutherland from Spittal to Beauly.

The move follows shock expressed by some local people over the scale of the project and concern over the preferred coastal route for the 400kV line.

There is concern over the preferred route for the new 400kV line is near the Sutherland coast rather than inland.

Golspie Community Council secretary Henrietta Marriott reported to the group's meeting on Tuesday that SSEN had been asked to meet Helmsdale, Brora and Golspie community councils next month.

She said: "SSEN came back and said: 'No, we want to collate all responses from the public consultation before we come to meet you as community councils'.

"I will publicise it when we get a firm date."

SSEN is currently inviting feedback on the proposal by a deadline of March 31, and has held various consultation sessions in communities along the route. Details of the project are on its website.
