Elgin to Inverness early morning train service axed by ScotRail
ScotRail has axed an early morning train service between Elgin and Inverness due to “low demand”.
The Scottish Government-run rail operator will withdraw the 7.18am service from Elgin to the Highland capital in May 2025.
ScotRail said that an average of 12 people per day used the service.
The train that runs 20 minutes earlier - at 6.56am - will continue to operate and will now run with three carriages. The 7.43am service will also continue to run.
Changes will allow ScotRail to reintroduce the 11.12pm train from Inverness to Tain on Friday and Saturday nights. This service operated prior to the pandemic.
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said he was excited by the news.
“We’re excited to introduce these timetable enhancements, which will offer greater flexibility for evening travellers,” he said.
“Everyone at ScotRail is working hard to deliver a safe, reliable, and sustainable rail service that provides a positive experience for our customers.
“The reintroduction of this late night service on a trial basis will make it even easier for customers to get where they need to go, and choose rail as their preferred mode of transport.”
