A flood warning has been issued in Sutherland for residents living in Strath Oykel.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) issued the warning, which is the next step up from a 'flood alert', in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

It follows recent heavy rains in western parts of the Highlands, which have already resulted in a number of earlier flood alerts and flood warnings for several of the region's communities - including those in Strath Oykel.

The latest flood warning covers a stretch of the River Oykel from Oykel Bridge to the Inveroykel Bailey Bridge at Invercassley.

Speaking when the warning was issued at 2.15am, a Sepa spokesperson said: "Warning. Flooding is expected in Strath Oykel. Act now.

“Agricultural land in Strath Oykel, from Oykel Bridge to Inveroykel Bailey Bridge and at Invercassley, is at risk of flooding. Inveroykel Bailey Bridge may be inaccessible. For information, the river level at Easter Turnaig gauging station exceeded 1.6m at 2am.

“Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. Advice and information is available on our website or by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188.

“This flood warning is now in force until further notice.”
