The A9 was closed in two locations on Tuesday lunchtime after separate crashes on the busy trunk road in Easter Ross and Sutherland.

A crash on the route in Sutherland between Lothbeg and Helmsdale shut the road there at around 1.30pm.

Confirming that closure, Traffic Scotland said: “[A9] closed in both directions due to a collision. Road users are advised to use alternative routes at this time. Emergency services [are] aware.”

And not long before that crash, a separate unrelated collision also closed the road both ways in Easter Ross in the Alness area.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed it had sent two appliances to a three-car crash on the A9 in Easter Ross - one from Dingwall and another from Invergordon at around 1.20pm.

In a travel update posted shortly before 2pm, Traffic Scotland had the crash site located on the A9 at the Struie turn-off close to the Skiach services.

Traffic Scotland said; “The A9 at Alness is currently closed in both directions due to a road traffic incident. Road users are advised to use an alternative route at this time.”

There was no immediate word as to whether there were any injuries at either crash site.

The SFRS did not have any immediate information regarding the crash near Lothbeg.

Police have been approached for information.
