Hundreds of homes in north-west Sutherland were without electricity on Thursday after a power cut.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) reported the outage at around 10.30am.

It affected almost 400 homes in the Assynt area, with SSEN's Powertrack map showing impacts over an area stretching from the northern edge of Lochinver, north across Clachtoll, Stoer, Drumbeg and almost as far east as Kylesku. The map was also showing a small patch of power outages centred on Lairg area as well - suggesting that other homes between there and Assynt could also be impacted as well.

At the time of writing, SSEN was reporting that it hoped to restore power by 3.30pm, although the incident was still showing engineers en route at 2pm - raising the possibility that the projected power restoration time could slip.

A spokesperson for SSEN said: "We're aware of a power cut... affecting 386 homes. This unplanned fault is affecting the local area, and it's likely several streets in the area are affected by the same power cut.

"Our engineers are in your local area and working hard to get your power restored as soon as possible.

"At this stage, based on initial investigations, we're aiming to restore your power by 3.30pm.

"The cause of this power cut is a fault on the overhead network. This is the most common type of fault we see, and our teams are very experienced in dealing with these issues. In most cases, our engineers are able to get your power back on by simply replacing a fuse at the local substation, however, if the fault is severe, this may take us longer to fix."
