Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks reports power cut affecting 272 homes in Caithness and Sutherland with north coast area stretching from Melvich to Mey affected

Hundreds of people on the north coast of Caithness and Sutherland are without electricity this morning.

Power cuts have affected at least 272 homes east of Thurso in the Dunnet, Castletown and Mey areas, and 25 miles west at Strathy near Melvich.

Energy giant SSEN says its engineers are aware of the issue “but are busy on another fault”.

The power failure was first reported at 7.46 am today and SSEN say they hope to have it resolved by 11 am.

An SSEN spokeswoman said: “Once our engineers have restored power to another fault, or another team becomes available in the meantime, they will be sent straight to your area to get the power back on.”

The company blamed a fault in its overhead network for the widespread outage
